Ocean Beach

Fresh, Free-Spirited Ocean Beach – Of all the neighborhoods and communities within San Diego, none match the free-spirited magnitude of Ocean Beach. Referred locally as the Haight Ashbury of San Diego, Ocean Beach is home to historic landmarks, family owned businesses and loving hippie subculture. For a So Cal afternoon of surfing, socializing and shopping, the Zen atmosphere of Ocean Beach remains timeless.

The quaint, low-key community prides itself on creating a soothing, stress-free environment for residents and visitors of all ages. Both Ocean Beach Elementary and Warren-Walker Elementary School provide nurturing safe havens for children to learn at their fullest potential among the company of their peers. Implementing these elementary values out on the open water later in life, many surfers of Ocean Beach credit their life-long local roots for their dedication to their sport and respect for their beaches. Surfrider San Diego, a non-profit organization based out of Ocean Beach strives to protect the beaches and ocean locally, by hosting monthly beach clean ups and volunteer events.

On any given Wednesday, the Farmer’s Market along Newport Avenue packs the street     curb- to-curb full of organic produce, hand-crafted jewelry and passionate street musicians. Winston’s on Bacon Street is home base to the fresh funk that the locals crave. Just across the street a stone’s throw away, the line for a world famous Hodad’s burger leaves a passerby wandering: Just how long would I wait in line for a perfect burger? Featured in 2007 on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, Hodad’s has become one of Ocean Beach’s highlights.

Venturing to the end of Newport Avenue, acrobats, hula hoopers and poi throwers line the grass drawing a local audience in front of the perfect ocean back drop. Skateboarders being pulled by their four-legged companions speed by on their way to Dog Beach, one of the only  off-leash beaches in the United States designated specifically for salty dog enjoyment!

At the end of a long day, catch a sunset view and a few fish tacos at Ocean Beach Pier Café, sitting at the very tip of the longest pier on the West Coast: Ocean Beach Pier built in 1966. Pizza Port’s custom pies and craft brews satisfy the sun-drenched soul. For a spiritual sun salutation, yoga on the hill of Sunset Cliffs is the proper way to end the day in true O.B. fashion. It’s time to celebrate life. It’s time to visit Ocean Beach.
